As a professional bike fitter, this is one of the most common situations I help cyclists with. The good news is that if you’ve recorded your measurements correctly, recreating your fit becomes much easier.

In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how I record a professional bike fit so you can confidently reproduce your position on the same bike—or transfer it to another one.

Why Recording Your Bike Fit Matters

A professional bike fit isn’t just about making today’s ride more comfortable.

It’s about creating a blueprint that can be recreated whenever your equipment changes.

Having accurate measurements allows you to:

  • Transfer your fit to a new bike
  • Compare different bike geometries
  • Replace handlebars or stems without guessing
  • Rebuild your bike after travel
  • Restore your position after maintenance
  • Share accurate measurements with your bike fitter

Many cyclists spend hundreds of dollars on a professional bike fit but never document the final position. Six months later, they’re starting from scratch.

It is common for well-known bike shops to return bikes to our clients with the wrong fit measurements despite our strictest instructions. This recently happened to our clientwhose seat height was off a full 4cm!!!


The Equipment You’ll Need To Measure Your Bike Like A Professional Bike Fitter

You don’t need a full bike fitting studio, but a few simple tools make the process much easier.

I recommend:

  • Measuring tape
  • Digital angle gauge
  • Clipboard or another flat object
  • Laser level (preferred)
  • Plumb bob or weighted string
  • Long straight edge or XY measuring tool

The goal isn’t expensive equipment—it’s consistency.


1. Record Your Saddle Angle

Place a clipboard or another flat object across the saddle and use a digital angle gauge to record the angle.

One important note: different saddle models have different shapes. If you’re changing saddles, don’t assume matching the overall surface angle will produce the same result.

Personally, when switching between saddles, I often use the nose of the saddle as my primary reference because it tends to be much more consistent between bikes.

Brake hoods are another measurement that frequently changes over time.

Even a minor bump or crash can rotate one hood a few degrees.

Using your angle gauge, measure each hood separately.

If one side differs from the other, it’s worth correcting before recording any additional measurements.

Symmetry matters.


3. Measure Saddle Height

Saddle height is probably the most commonly recorded measurement—but it’s also one of the most inconsistently measured.

Rather than measuring from random points, always choose a repeatable landmark.

If your saddle has a centre reference mark, use it.

If it doesn’t, measure from the middle of the saddle and always use that exact point.

From there, measure to the centre of the bottom bracket.

Consistency is far more important than using someone else’s preferred measurement method.


4. Record Your Reach

This is one of the most valuable measurements I take during every professional bike fit.

Measure from the:

Nose (tip) of the saddle → Rear (start) of the hood

This measurement captures your riding reach regardless of stem length or handlebar design.

Measure both the left and right sides.

If they differ, your hoods likely aren’t perfectly symmetrical.

I rely on this measurement far more than stem length because stems can change while overall rider position stays exactly the same.


5. Record Saddle Setback

To accurately record saddle fore-aft position, I recommend using a laser level.

Align the laser through the centre of the bottom bracket while ensuring it’s perfectly perpendicular to the bike by passing through the crank at the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions.

Then measure:

Bottom bracket centre → Nose of saddle

Combined with saddle height and saddle angle, this completely defines your saddle position.


6. Record Your Handlebar Position

Professional bike fitters often use an XY measuring tool.

This records:

  • X coordinate
  • Y coordinate

relative to the bottom bracket.

These two numbers make it incredibly easy to reproduce a cockpit position.

Don’t own an XY tool?

No problem.

You can still accurately recreate your position by recording:

  • Saddle to handlebar drop
  • Bottom bracket to handlebar centre
  • Saddle tip to hood
  • Handlebar centre to hood

These measurements provide an excellent alternative.


7. Measure Handlebar Reach (Bar Depth)

One measurement that many cyclists forget is the distance from:

Handlebar centre → Rear of hood

I often refer to this as the handlebar reach or bar depth.

Two bikes can have identical saddle-to-handlebar measurements but feel completely different because one handlebar has a much deeper reach than the other.

Recording this number makes transferring your bike fit significantly easier.


8. Record Handlebar Width

Handlebar width affects comfort, handling, aerodynamics, and upper body posture.

I recommend recording:

  • Centre-to-centre handlebar width
  • Hood-to-hood width

These measurements become especially important if you’re replacing integrated handlebars.


The Most Common Bike Measurement Mistakes

Over the years, I’ve noticed several mistakes that repeatedly create problems.

These include:

  • Measuring from inconsistent saddle locations
  • Forgetting to record saddle angle
  • Ignoring hood symmetry
  • Measuring to the front instead of the rear of the hood
  • Recording stem length instead of rider reach
  • Forgetting handlebar dimensions

Avoiding these simple mistakes can save hours of frustration later.


Bike Geometry Isn’t the Whole Story

Cyclists often become obsessed with stack and reach numbers published by bike manufacturers.

While frame geometry certainly matters, it’s only one piece of the puzzle.

The final riding position also depends on:

  • Saddle selection
  • Saddle position
  • Stem length
  • Stem angle
  • Spacer height
  • Handlebar reach
  • Hood position

Two identical frames can produce completely different rider positions simply because of different component choices.

That’s why professional bike fitting focuses on the rider—not just the frame.

Absolutely.

Even if you’ve already had a professional bike fit, taking thirty minutes to document your measurements can save you countless hours in the future.

It’s especially worthwhile before:

  • Buying a new bike
  • Flying with your bike
  • Changing saddles

  • Installing a new stem
  • Selling your current bike

Think of it as creating a backup of your ideal riding position.

How accurate do my measurements need to be?

Aim for measurements within 1–2 mm for linear dimensions and 0.5° for angles. Small errors can add up, especially when transferring a fit to another bike or changing multiple components.

Can I measure my bike fit myself?
